The Portuguese Joao Sousa beat second seed Karen Khachanov from Russia in R2 of  St. Petersburg Open 2019 in straight sets 7/6(2), 6/4. The match lasted 1 h 38 mns. The tennis player from Guimaraes played better on his second serve and returned better as well, making fewer unforced errors (30 vs 48).

In the quarterfinals the Portuguese will take on Mikhail Kukushkin from Kazakhstan.

Joao said in his on-court interview: “The crowd was very fair today. They were pushing Karen and they pushed me as well. I played a great match and I think they enjoyed this match. Unfortunately Karen couldn’t win and he is a Russian playing at home, but in the end I was able to win and I’m very happy”. On his next opponent Kukushkin: “Mikhail is a great player, I played against him recently in Davis Cup and there was a different ambiance. Hopefully, we’ll have a little bit more crowd. It’s going to be another tough match – just as today, so now it’s time to recover and to enjoy this win”.
