St. Petersburg Open 2020 Line-Up: There Is No Such Thing As Too Many Tennis Stars!

18.09.2020, 16:07 #HOT #News #Best

The Organizing Committee of the 25th anniversary edition of St. Petersburg due to begin on October 12 in the Northern Capital managed to put together an unprecedented star-studded line-up. The news came on Tuesday, September 15, with the issuing of the final entry list of the tournament that has upgraded its category to ATP 500 this year.

There are no rank-and-file players in the main draw. The top seed is World no. 5 Daniil Medvedev from Russia who has reached the US Open 2020 semifinals. He is also the defending champion of St. Petersburg Open: in 2019 Medvedev brought the trophy back to Russia after a 15-year long hiatus. Stefanos Tsitsipas, a Greek with Russian roots and Medvedev’s all-time rival, the biggest name among tournament’s first-timers, will also compete on the court of Sibur Arena. Ranked 6th in the world ranking, he is the winner of the ATP Finals 2019 in singles, and the first Greek to crack the Top 10. The tournament will welcome the other two players from the Russian troika: World №. 12, US Open 2020 quarterfinalist Andrey Rublev and World №16 Karen Khachanov. Last year’s runner-up Borna Coric from Croatia (№ 26) is also coming, as well as St. Petersburg Open 2015 winner and runner-up at the recent edition of the Cincinnati Masters Milos Raonic (№ 19).

World № 8 Matteo Berrettini is returning to St. Petersburg, too. In 2018 he won the doubles title of St. Petersburg Open with Fabio Fognini. Rome’s native has progressed a lot since then to become a Top 10 player. A powerful serve and a killer forehand are the main weapons which enable the Italian to defeat top players. At the recent edition of US Open Berrettini fell in R4 to the Russian Andrey Rublev who avenged his last year’s loss. Now the two players might as well meet again on the court of Sibur Arena.

Russian tennis fans will once again enjoy the game of the Canadian with Russian roots Denis Shapovalov (№ 14). This will be his second appearance at St. Petersburg’s tournament. This time, however, Denis is bringing a new coach – the pet of Russian fans and St. Petersburg Open 2004 winner Mikhail Youzhny. St. Petersburg will welcome the winner of 3 Slams and St. Petersburg Open 2016 runner-up Stan Wawrinka from Switzerland (№ 17). Two-time US Open semifinalist Pablo Carreño Busta (№ 18) also entered the tournament.

And that’s not the whole list yet. The winner of ATP Final 2017 Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria (№ 22) has also decided to participate – the former World №3 will be joined by his opponent in the aforementioned 2017 finals in London David Goffin from Belgium, who was no. 7 in the ATP ranking back in 2017 and is still at an impressive № 11 position. Meet another participant – the 22-year old American Taylor Fritz (№ 28), this year’s runner-up in Acapulco, where he had a good chance of winning the title if it were not for his opponent Rafael Nadal. The Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, 21, is another interesting player to watch as he has just won his maiden ATP singles title in Kitzbuhel, Austria, to reach his career high 39th spot in world rankings. The most titled Japanese player Kei Nishikori is also coming to St. Petersburg. Former World №4, he has one Slam finals under his belt and an Olympic bronze medal in singles (Rio-2016). To say nothing of two-time Grand Slam runner-up in singles (US Open 2017 and Wimbledon 2018), former World №5 Kevin Anderson from RSA. The Americans Reilly Opelka (№ 36), Sam Querrey (№. 46), and Tennys Sandgren (№ 49) will make tough opponents for any other entrant.

A brief press-release does not offer enough space to list all the achievements and titles of the whole main draw of the 25th anniversary edition of St. Petersburg Open, to find the full list of participants, go to the website www.spbopen.ru. One thing is clear: this is a really unique line-up like you’ve never seen before!
