The 31-year-old German Jan-Lennard Struff sent 2nd seed Canadian Denis Shapovalov packing as he beat him at the St. Peterburg Open 2021– 6/4, 6/3 in 1 h 19 mins.
Shapovalov’s first serve didn’t work its best way (57%), he also made more unforced errors (33 v. 12).
“Denis is an amazing player and this victory means a lot to me. In Dubai he beat me pretty easily and he played a very good match, different from me. I knew I need to put a lot of energy in this match today and I did. I was serving well, returning well, playing well from the baseline. I was pretty ready for the match, so that’s was the key. I’m very happy to reach the semi-finals here for the second time”, – Struff commented on the match.
Struff will take on the American Taylor Fritz for reaching the final. Their H2H is 1-0 in Struff’s favor.
