- About the tournament
The Match of Legends opened Sunday’s program at the St. Petersburg Open 2019. Team Russia was represented by Elena Dementieva and Mikhail Youzhny together with playing captain – what a surprise! – Artem Dzyuba, the football player from Zenith St. Petersburg and the Russian national team. The German Tommy Haas and the Croat Iva Majoli made the lineup of World Team with Alexander Medvedev, the director general of St. Petersburg Open and of Zenith football club, playing the role of captain.
The four former tennis pros showed some amazing tennis to the crowd. Tommy Haas served well and his forehand was on fire. Elena Dementieva and Mikhail Youzhny also demonstrated a good shape. The Russians won several spectacular rallies and broke the opponents. Dzyuba substituted Dementieva right thereafter. And Medvedev substituted Majoli. The footballer and his boss also played good. Dzyuba spent two games on the court and the Russian team took the first set.
Dzyuba also replaced Youzhny later in the match and, Medvedev substituted Haas. The tension was there despite the rather relaxed atmosphere. The World Team won the second set. And then, playing in its original lineup, was leading in the champion’s tiebreak. Majoli played some good shots at the time.
Dzyuba helped Youzhny to save a couple of break-points, but the third time was lucky for World Team. Mikhail failed to run down to Majoli’s ball and World Team celebrated victory – 4/6, 7/5, 10-7.
