The Russian Evgeny Donskoy defeated the Swede Mikael Ymer 6/2, 7/5 in 1 h 30 mins. The Muscovite played aggressively from the start and was varying his shots and coming to the net. He had 18 winners under his belt while his opponent – just 7.

In the second set Ymer rallied to level the score when he broke back at the end, but Donskoy showed his character and clinched the victory.

In the final round of qualifications, he will face the Dutch Botic van de Zandschulp, the top seed of the qualifications at St. Petersburg Open 2021. The tennis player from the Netherlands reached the 2nd round as his opponent from Australia Marc Polmans retired from the match when the score was 6/6 in the first set.

“It was a great match, I enjoyed the way I played today. I could, of course, finish the match a little bit earlier, but I got nervous. Anyway, I’m still happy with the match overall. Now I am coached by Vladimir Karusevich – we are of the same age and used to play for the national (juniors) team together. He is a good friend and an excellent professional. Earlier Andrey Kuznetsov helped me a lot and made an invaluable contribution to my game. So I am grateful to everyone, including Boris Sobkin, who trained me before. It was an incredible match against Felix Auger-Aliassime at the US Open, I know that I can play well, although it doesn’t always work out. Probably, there are some psychological flaws, but in general I train well and feel great physically. I hope that everything is still ahead in my tennis career”, – Donskoy commented  on the match.

And then added: “Only in St. Petersburg journalists ask me about my children, apparently the journalists are kinder here. The children are great. I think, maybe in the spring the older one will start to play tennis. As for the younger one, it’s too early yet. They all feel great and they are super nice kids themselves”.
