The top seed of St. Petersburg Open 2018 Dominic Thiem and Russian No.1 Karen Khachanov made a boat trip on the rivers and canals of St. Petersburg on Tuesday, September 18th. Sunny weather took over yesterday’s rain thus creatingf favorable conditions for the cruise on gthe Neva river.
A half-hour water trip on the motor boat «Byzantium» started from the embankment of the Moika river. Then Dominic and Karen went into open waters. The magnificent Neva with beautiful views of the Hermitage and eter-and-Paul Fortress fascinated tennis stars.
After a photoshoot the Austrian and the Russian answered fans’ questions from social nets right off the boat online. Being Russian, Karen taught Thiem some general Russian phrases: so now the Austrian top-10 player can easily say «My name is Dominic» in the language of Pushkin and Turgenev.
«I expected it’s gonna be nice, because the city is amazing. I already saw part of it three years ago. Obviously, there are really amazing buildings. And this boat trip was so impressive. I enjoyed it a lot», – said Thiem.
The river cruise of the two tennis players wasn’t full without racquets and balls. Dominic was so impressed, that he hit a few balls right off the boat – one of the onlookers staying on the bridge caught the ball from the Austrian thus receiving a great souvenir from one of the best ATP players.
After the trip the two tennis pros were due to resume practice. Dominic will play the German Jan-Lennard Struff, while Karen will face 3-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka.
«Every match is a big challenge. Anyway, it’s interesting to play against Stan. I’ll try to prepare as well as I can. I’m really looking forward to this match» – Karen said.
