DANIIL MEDVEDEV STARTS TO DEFEND HIS TITLE

The top seed Daniil Medvedev from Russia began his title defence at St. Petersburg Open 2020. In the opening match  he defeated the seasoned player Richard Gasquet from France 3/6, 6/3, 6/0 in 1 h 37 mins. The Russian fired 23 aces while his opponent had  none and Daniil also had an advantage in points won on his return (37-16).

“I felt I led the game but there were a couple of close outs and a bad game on my serve in the opening set. But after that I found my rhythm and I broke him several times. I am happy I rallied to win and that I was playing consistently in the 2nd and 3rd sets. The crowd support was unbelievably good. It helped me a lot”, – said Medvedev after the match. In the next round he will take on Reilly Opelka from the USA.
