Thiem beats Medvedev to reach sf
The top seed of St. Petersburg Open 2018 Dominic Thiem continues his run at the tournament. He defeated the Russian Daniil Medvedev in QF – 6/2, 3/6, 7/6(2).
The Austrian held match point in the 12th game of the 3rd set, but Medvedev managed to hold making three aces in a row. Unfortunately for Daniil, Thiem was better in the decisive tie-breaker.
“First of all, I am very sorry that I beat a Russian guy. It was a great match from the beginning to the end. The first set was easier for me, the second one was easier for him and the third set was 50/50 – I couldn’t confirm the break and then it was a very close match, a tie-break in the decider is always a matter of luck. So I am lucky that I won” – said Dominic in his on-court interview. Thiem will vie for a place in the finals with the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.
“So far I have no idea how to beat him – we played three times in 2015 and he won all three matches. S I should put up something new. We often practice together, he is a really nice guy, so I am looking forward to facing him in a great semifinal”, – Dominic commented on his upcoming semifinals.
