Italians will do everything to win the finals

The Italians Matteo Berrittini and Simone Bolelli spoke to the correspondent of  St. Petersburg Open 2019 press-service after their victory over the Belgians Sander Gille and Joran Vligen 7/5, 7/5. They shared their impressions on the tournament and said how they like to play together.

– Matteo and Simone, congrats on your win today. What was the key of your victory today?

Simone Bolelli: We are happy with the win today. These guys play very well with good confidence; they are winning lots of matches this year. At the beginning of the match it was tough but we played solid, we played very good game on our serve, we tried to play aggressive and fight. In doubles every ball counts we just play maybe better than them on some return games. We tried to push them and we are happy to win.

– What was the toughest match on the tournament so far?

Matteo Berrittini: I think all the matches are tough at this tournament. For sure I think we did a great job in the first round 6/2, 6/2 [v. Roman Jebavy and Philipp Oswald], we were playing really well. I think the quarterfinals [v. Frederik Nielsen and Tim Puetz] was really tough, we played unbelievably on the super tie-break. And also today, you know, they had a lot of chances in the second set on my serve, so you have to be ready for every game because this is doubles and especially indoor on hard courts.

– Do you have any expectations from the finals, though we are still waiting for your opponents to be determined? I suppose that for you, Matteo, it is something special as you are the reigning champion in doubles…

Simone Bolelli: It doesn’t matter who is gonna be on the other side. We are in the finals and we know that we can play well, of course, we are gonna try to win. This is the key.

Matteo Berrittini: I am really happy. Last year I was playing with Fabio [Fognini] and he used to play with Fabio a lot (pointing at Simone), they won a lot of matches. I am really happy to join him, we are good friends. I am really looking forward to playing the finals on Sunday; I am going to rest a little bit tomorrow after the two matches today and yesterday.

– Any plans for tomorrow and what are your expectations on St. Petersburg?

Matteo Berrittini: We have been to Hermitage, it was unbelievable. The hotel is very nice, so the city is unbelievable too. So we really enjoy being here and tomorrow maybe we are gonna visit some more.

– What is the main secret of the strength of your duo?

Simone Bolelli: We are good friends. We play many years, also in the club matches in Italy, I saw Matteo growing up when he was 14. We know each other pretty good and I think it is also very important for doubles to have good confidence with a partner. We are like this and we try to play well on court and enjoy also.

Matteo Berrittini: We are both serving and returning well. We are playing aggressive, we like playing each other.

– Professional tennis players are rather active users of social networks. What is your attitude to social networks?

Matteo Berrittini: I think it is a part of our job today. You know, we have to be focused on our sport and our career but it is important to make fans happy and to let them know what is going on, so for sure we have some people who are helping us to do this.
